Issue Overview

Discrimination against Muslim women and girls is a growing social justice issue in not only the Middle East, but countries right around the world. Females are denied so many rights due to their cultural values and religion, and this is becoming a real concern for the safety and well being of women, as well as the fact that this growing issue is giving these women a sense of inequality and inferiority. Millions of oppressed Muslim women are born into these situations of male cultrual dominance and are punished severely when they try to practice their own free will and escape these strictures, therefore giving them no notion of living any other way. Primarily, teachings of the Quran and Bible are to blame for this issue. While many women claim to not be opressed nor marginalized, the degradation of females in Islamic culture is blatantly unfair. All that can really be done is social awareness of the ongoing issue of discrimination against Muslim women – to make people see what goes on in Muslim culture and to at least try to make a change and create equality. Also, acceptance of Muslim women and their Hijab practices in western countries is important.
